50 Billion Things by 2020

It was about one year ago when Cisco projected that there would be 50 Billion “things” on the earth by 2020.

What they refer to is the number of items that could potentially have an IP address, be cataloged, tracked, communicated with, etc.

That vision remains as several technologies are anticipated to converge including IPv6, M2M, presence and location detection, and low cost computing.

This will be a boon for Big Data and Extreme Information Processing as their will be increasingly more data, from more things, which all requires management.
